    What Does That Mean?

    PN, SDR, ISI Mark, PE 100 — HDPE pipe labels are full of terms nobody explains. Search or browse below for a plain-language answer to every one, with a link to go deeper if you want.

    HDPE

    — High-Density Polyethylene

    The tough, flexible black plastic that HDPE pipes are made from. It doesn't rust, doesn't corrode, and is safe for drinking water.

    It's called "high-density" because the plastic molecules are packed tightly, which is what gives the pipe its strength and long life.

    OD

    — Outer Diameter

    The width of the pipe measured across its outside edge, in millimetres. This is how HDPE pipes are sized in India.

    DN

    — Nominal Diameter

    The size name printed on the pipe (like "DN 110"). For HDPE pipes in India, this number matches the outer diameter in millimetres.

    Wall Thickness

    How thick the pipe's plastic wall is, measured in millimetres. A thicker wall means the pipe can handle more pressure.

    Carbon Black

    The ingredient that makes HDPE pipes black. It blocks sunlight (UV rays) so the pipe doesn't turn brittle and crack over time.

    IS 4984:2016 requires 2.0–2.5% carbon black by weight — enough to protect the pipe indefinitely, even if it sits in the sun for years.

    PN

    — Pressure Nominal

    The maximum water pressure a pipe can safely handle, shown as a number like "PN 6" or "PN 10", measured in bar.

    Higher PN doesn't mean better quality — it just means a thicker wall built for higher pressure. Buying more PN than you need just wastes money.

    Bar

    The unit pressure is measured in on a pipe label. 1 bar is roughly equal to 10 metres of water height (head).

    SDR

    — Standard Dimension Ratio

    A number that tells you how thick a pipe's wall is relative to its size. Lower SDR = thicker wall = higher pressure rating.

    SDR = Outer Diameter ÷ Wall Thickness. A 110mm pipe with a 10mm wall is SDR 11.

    PE 63 / PE 80 / PE 100

    — Material Grade

    The strength class of the plastic itself. PE 100 is the strongest and is what TARKO uses as standard — it carries more pressure for the same wall thickness.

    MRS

    — Minimum Required Strength

    The lab-tested strength number behind a PE grade. PE 100 means the material has an MRS of 10.0 MPa — the number after "PE" is this value, in units of 0.1 MPa.

    Water Hammer

    A sudden pressure spike that happens when a valve is closed quickly and the moving water has nowhere to go. It can burst an undersized pipe.

    This is why pipe selection always adds a safety margin (usually 20–50%) on top of normal working pressure.

    Static Head

    The extra pressure caused by height difference — water flowing downhill gains about 1 bar of pressure for every 10 metres it drops.

    BIS

    — Bureau of Indian Standards

    India's official government body that writes safety and quality standards for products, including HDPE pipes.

    ISI Mark

    The stamp on a pipe that proves it passed BIS's official testing. Always look for this before buying — it's your guarantee the pipe won't fail early.

    IS 4984:2016

    The official Indian rulebook for HDPE water pipes — it sets the sizes, pressure ratings, materials, and every test a pipe must pass to earn the ISI Mark.

    Control Unit

    A batch of pipe made in one continuous production run (up to 48 hours) from the same raw material. Each control unit is tested separately before it can carry the ISI Mark.

    OIT

    — Oxidation Induction Time

    A lab test that checks whether enough anti-aging ingredient (antioxidant) was mixed into the pipe to stop it degrading over decades.

    Slow Crack Growth (SCG)

    A test that checks how well a pipe resists tiny cracks slowly spreading under years of constant pressure — the main reason PE 100 is specified for critical projects.

    Jal Jeevan Mission

    — JJM

    The Indian government's programme to bring piped tap water to every rural household. It requires ISI-certified HDPE pipes under IS 4984:2016.

    Butt Fusion

    The strongest way to join two HDPE pipes — both ends are heated and pressed together until they melt into one solid piece, with no gaskets or threads to leak.

    Electrofusion

    — EF

    A joining method using a special fitting with a built-in heating wire — good for repairs and tight spaces where a fusion machine can't fit.

    Socket Fusion

    A quick heat-fusion method for small pipes (up to 63mm) — used for farm laterals and household connections.

    Pressure Testing

    A final check after installation where the pipe is filled with water and pressurised above its normal working level for an hour, to confirm there are no leaks before it's buried or put into use.

    Backfilling

    Refilling the trench with soil after the pipe is laid — done in careful layers with fine soil close to the pipe so no sharp rocks damage it.
