    Understanding Pipe Pressure Ratings: What PN Numbers Mean in Simple Terms

    PN 6, PN 10, PN 16 — what do these numbers mean on HDPE pipes? This guide explains pressure ratings in plain language so you can choose the right pipe for your project.

    When you look at an HDPE pipe, you see labels like 'PN 6' or 'PN 10'. Many buyers ignore this and buy by size alone — which can lead to pipe bursts or wasted money on over-specified pipe. This guide explains what PN means and how to choose the right pressure class.

    What Does PN Mean?

    PN stands for Pressure Nominal. It tells you the maximum continuous water pressure the pipe can safely carry, in bar (1 bar ≈ 10 metres of water height, or approximately 14.5 PSI). PN 6 = 6 bar maximum. PN 10 = 10 bar maximum.

    11 Pressure Classes in IS 4984:2016

    IS 4984:2016 defines 11 pressure classes for HDPE pipes:

    How to Find the PN You Need

    1. 1Find your pump's maximum discharge pressure (shut-off head) in bar (or divide metres by 10).
    2. 2Add the elevation difference between pump and highest point (metres ÷ 10 = bar).
    3. 3Add 20–30% for water hammer (pressure surge when valves close rapidly).
    4. 4Choose the next higher PN from the table above.

    Example: Submersible pump at 60m depth with 4 bar discharge. Tank is 10m above ground level = 1 bar static head. Total = 5 bar. Add 25% surge = 6.25 bar. Choose PN 8 to be safe.

    For Most Farm Applications

    • Gravity-fed tank to field irrigation: PN 2.5 to PN 4 is usually enough
    • Submersible pump to overhead tank: PN 6 to PN 10 depending on pump depth
    • Sprinkler mainline: PN 6 (standard for most Indian farm systems)
    • Borewell rising main: PN 10 to PN 16 depending on pump depth and discharge pressure

    Does Higher PN Mean Better Quality?

    No. Higher PN means a thicker pipe wall — not better material quality. A PN 6 pipe and PN 10 pipe of the same OD and material grade are equally well-made. Buying PN 16 for a PN 4 application just wastes money on unnecessary wall thickness.
