    PE63 vs PE80 vs PE100: Complete Material Grade Comparison

    The material grade printed on your HDPE pipe determines how much pressure it can carry. This guide explains PE63, PE80, and PE100 using data from IS 4984:2016 and the BIS Product Manual.

    When you see 'PE 100' or 'PE 80' printed on an HDPE pipe, it refers to the material grade — the strength class of the polyethylene resin used to make the pipe. This grade directly determines how much internal pressure the pipe can safely carry for a given wall thickness (SDR).

    What Do the Grade Numbers Mean?

    The number after 'PE' refers to the MRS — Minimum Required Strength — of the material, expressed in units of 0.1 MPa. This value is determined through long-term hydrostatic pressure testing at elevated temperatures, then extrapolated to predict 50-year performance at 20°C.

    The BIS Product Manual (PM/IS 4984/2/June 2022) categorises HDPE pipes into pressure rating groups for certification purposes. This grouping directly reflects the material grade capabilities:

    Notice that PE 63 cannot achieve Group-C (high pressure) ratings at all. PE 80 and PE 100 both reach PN 20, but PE 100 does so at SDR 7.4 while PE 80 requires SDR 6 (thicker wall, heavier pipe, more material cost).

    Piping engineers working on high-end industrial projects or export orders often compare the Indian Standard (IS 4984:2016) with major international standards like ISO 4427 and EN 12201-2. There is a significant difference in how safety coefficients map to pressure ratings:

    Why do these ratings differ? Under ISO 4427, a PE 100 compound has a Minimum Required Strength (MRS) of 10.0 MPa. With a safety factor of 1.25, the design stress is 8.0 MPa. This calculation allows an SDR 17 pipe to handle a full 10.0 bar of pressure. In contrast, the Indian Standard IS 4984:2016 implements a more conservative safety coefficient of 1.6 (yielding a design stress of 6.3 MPa for PE 100). This provides an additional safety margin for surge pressures, higher soil temperatures, and installation variations typical of Indian water grids, mapping SDR 17 to PN 8.

    Choose PE 100 When:

    • You want the highest pressure capacity for any given pipe size
    • You are building infrastructure meant to last 50+ years
    • You want to use thinner walls (lower SDR) to reduce material and weight
    • Your project specifications call for PE 100 (most new specs do)
    • You are bidding for government tenders — PE 100 is increasingly the default

    Choose PE 80 When:

    • Your project specification specifically calls for PE 80
    • Budget is extremely constrained and PN requirements are moderate (PN 10 or below)
    • You are extending an existing PE 80 pipeline network for compatibility

    Avoid PE 63:

    PE 63 is an older grade being phased out of most specifications. It cannot handle pressure ratings above PN 8, making it unsuitable for modern water supply and irrigation applications. Unless your specification explicitly requires PE 63 for a legacy system, always choose PE 80 or PE 100.
