    When HDPE Is the Better Choice

    The Cost Question

    PVC almost always looks cheaper on the quotation because its per-metre price is lower. But the number that matters is total installed cost over the life of the line. HDPE needs far fewer fittings (heat fusion joins pipe directly), leaks essentially nothing, never rusts or scales, and lasts 50+ years. A PVC line that must be dug up and re-laid every 20–30 years — plus the cost of leaks and lost water in between — usually ends up more expensive.

    Rule of thumb: for pressurised, buried, agricultural, or drinking-water lines, choose HDPE. For low-pressure indoor plumbing and gravity drainage, PVC is fine.
