    What is PLB Duct Pipe? Full Form and Plain-English Guide

    PLB duct is the pipe your fibre broadband runs through. Here is what the name means, why the inside is slippery on purpose, and how it differs from ordinary HDPE conduit.

    If you have seen a tender or quotation asking for 'PLB duct 40/33' and want to know what that actually means before you sign it, this guide is for you. PLB duct is the black or coloured plastic pipe that carries optical fibre cable underground — the physical layer beneath every broadband and 5G connection.

    What Does PLB Stand For?

    PLB = Permanently Lubricated Bore. 'Bore' means the hollow inside of the pipe. 'Permanently lubricated' means that inner surface is slippery by design, and stays slippery for the life of the duct.

    That is not a coating. During manufacture the pipe is made in two layers at once — a tough outer layer of high-density polyethylene, and a thin inner layer mixed with silicone lubricant. Because the lubricant is built into the plastic rather than sprayed on top of it, groundwater cannot wash it out and cable pulling cannot scrape it off.

    Why Does the Inside Need to Be Slippery?

    Optical fibre is not pulled through a duct with a rope the way electrical cable often is. It is blown through with compressed air — the air carries the cable along so it barely touches the walls. Blowing is faster and much gentler on the glass fibre, which snaps if you yank it.

    But blowing only works if the friction is low enough. PLB duct has a coefficient of friction of 0.06 or less. Ordinary HDPE conduit sits between 0.15 and 0.25 — roughly three to four times more resistance.

    The practical result: fibre can be blown through PLB duct at up to 100 metres per minute in continuous runs over 1,000 metres. In plain conduit, you are pulling it in sections of 200 to 400 metres.

    Why That Saves Real Money

    Every point where you have to stop and restart means digging an access pit. A pit is not just a hole — it is excavation, traffic management, a permit, and then reinstating the road afterwards. Those costs dwarf the price of the pipe itself.

    Going from a pit every 300 metres to a pit every kilometre removes roughly two-thirds of them. On a long rural or highway route, that is where the budget is won or lost — not in the per-metre cost of the duct.

    What Do the Two Numbers Mean?

    PLB duct is described by a pair of numbers like 40/33. The first is the outside diameter in millimetres, the second is the inside diameter. So a 40/33 duct is 40mm across the outside with a 33mm hole down the middle, giving a 3.5mm wall.

    Why Are They Different Colours?

    Several operators often share one trench. Colour — red, green, orange, blue, yellow, grey — lets a technician opening a chamber three years later tell whose duct is whose without tracing it back. There is no single national colour code in India; the scheme is normally set by the project or the operator.

    How Is It Different From DWC Pipe?

    DWC (Double Wall Corrugated) pipe is the other common cable duct. Its outer wall is ribbed like a vacuum-cleaner hose, which makes it very strong against crushing. But its bore is not lubricated, so it is meant for cable that gets pulled, typically power cable. On big routes the two are often used together — a large DWC pipe as outer armour, with several PLB ducts running inside it.
