DWC Pipe Explained: Double Wall Corrugated Cable Duct
Why DWC cable duct has a ribbed outer wall and a smooth inner bore, what SN 8 and 450N actually mean, and when to specify it over plain conduit or PLB duct.
DWC stands for Double Wall Corrugated. It is the ribbed black pipe used to protect underground power, telecom and fibre cables — and the ribs are not decoration. They are the entire engineering idea behind the product.
Why Two Walls?
A DWC pipe has a corrugated outer wall and a smooth inner wall, fused together with air gaps between the ribs.
- The corrugated outer wall resists crushing. A ribbed profile is dramatically stiffer than a flat one of the same weight — the same reason corrugated cardboard holds up better than flat card.
- The smooth inner wall lets cable slide through without catching on the ribs.
The point of the design is strength per kilogram of plastic. You get the crush resistance of a much thicker solid pipe while using far less material — so it is lighter to carry, cheaper to freight and easier to lay.
What Do SN 8 and 450N Mean?
These describe how well the pipe resists being squashed by the soil and traffic above it.
SN stands for ring stiffness — SN 8 means 8 kN/m² of stiffness, the class normally specified for buried cable duct in India. 450N (Type 450) is the related crush strength requirement. Both are tested under IS 16025 Part 24, the Indian standard for cable duct pipes.
What Sizes Does DWC Come In?
DWC cable duct is sized by outer diameter, typically 40mm to 120mm for cable protection work. Smaller sizes (40–63mm) suit telecom and street lighting; larger sizes (90–120mm) take HT power cable or act as outer casing for multiple inner ducts.
It is supplied either in 6-metre straight lengths or 50-metre coils, with snap-fit couplers that push together without heat, tools or adhesive.

DWC or PLB Duct?
This is the question most people actually have. Short version: DWC is built for strength, PLB is built for low friction.

If the cable is power and gets pulled, DWC. If it is optical fibre and gets blown, PLB. On big routes, both — a large DWC pipe as outer armour with several PLB ducts threaded inside it, which gives crush protection and blowable fibre paths at the same time.
