What is BIS?

BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards — India's national standards body, set up by the Government of India under the BIS Act, 2016. BIS writes technical standards that products must meet and certifies manufacturers whose products pass those standards.

What is the ISI Mark?

ISI stands for Indian Standards Institute (the original name of BIS). The ISI Mark is the official product certification mark issued by BIS. When you see the ISI Mark on an HDPE pipe, it means all of the following:

• The pipe manufacturer has been inspected and approved by BIS
• The product has been tested in a BIS-recognised laboratory
• It meets all requirements of IS 4984:2016 (for HDPE water supply pipes)
• Random production samples are regularly tested to maintain the certification
• The manufacturer can lose the licence if quality falls below standard
• Ongoing BIS surprise audits check the factory at any time

What Tests Does IS 4984:2016 Require for ISI Mark?

• Internal pressure creep rupture test at 80°C for 48 hours — every production batch
• Longitudinal reversion test — pipe must not shrink more than 3% at 110°C
• Carbon black content: 2.0–2.5% by mass for UV protection
• Melt flow rate — checks for adulterated or recycled material
• Density measurement — confirms declared PE grade (PE 80 or PE 100)
• Oxidation induction time — confirms antioxidant is properly added
• Overall migration — ensures no harmful chemicals leach into drinking water

How to Verify the ISI Mark
