PE 63 vs PE 80 vs PE 100: Choosing the Right HDPE Material Grade
What is the difference between PE 63, PE 80 and PE 100 HDPE pipes? This guide explains material grades, how they affect pressure capacity, and which grade IS 4984:2016 recommends.
When you see 'PE 100' or 'PE 80' printed on an HDPE pipe, it refers to the material grade — the strength class of the polyethylene resin. This grade directly determines how much pressure the pipe can carry for a given wall thickness.
What Do the Grade Numbers Mean?
The number after 'PE' refers to the MRS — Minimum Required Strength — of the material, in units of 0.1 MPa:

Key insight: A PE 100 SDR 11 pipe handles PN 12.5, while a PE 80 SDR 11 pipe of exactly the same dimensions handles only PN 10. Same wall thickness, 25% more pressure capacity — just from the better material grade.
Pressure Classes Supported by Each Grade
From IS 4984:2016 Annex A grouping guidelines:
- PE 63: Supports PN 2 through PN 8 only (lower pressure applications)
- PE 80: Supports PN 2.5 through PN 20 (covers most Indian applications)
- PE 100: Supports PN 3.2 through PN 20 (all high-pressure applications)
Which Grade Should You Choose?
- PE 63: Only for very low-pressure gravity systems; being phased out of most specifications
- PE 80: Good for standard irrigation, water supply and municipal projects up to PN 16
- PE 100: Recommended for all applications — best performance, same or marginally higher cost
