    When to Use HDPE

    • Irrigation main lines (drip and sprinkler systems)
    • Borewell rising mains — HDPE handles submersible pump vibration better than rigid pipes
    • Long underground water supply lines that need to flex with soil movement
    • Any project where 50+ year service with no maintenance is the goal
    • Government water supply schemes (Jal Jeevan Mission specifies HDPE)

    When to Use PVC

    • Short above-ground connections and fittings
    • Gravity-flow irrigation where pressure is low
    • Budget-constrained projects with a 15–20 year horizon
    • Caution: PVC becomes brittle in UV exposure and freezing temperatures

    When to Use GI

    • Indoor plumbing where building codes require metal pipe
    • High-temperature applications where plastic is unsuitable
    • Exposed overhead pipe runs requiring rigidity
    • Caution: GI corrodes internally over years, reducing bore and contaminating water

    The Real Cost of Ownership

    A GI main line installed 15 years ago will have reduced bore due to rust buildup, higher friction losses and frequent leak repairs. An HDPE pipe installed the same day still has its full bore, smooth inner wall and zero leaks. Over 25–30 years, HDPE is significantly cheaper despite a higher upfront price compared to PVC.

    The Verdict
