    Sprinkler Irrigation Pipe Selection: Pressure, Size and Flow Rate Guide

    Choosing the wrong pipe for your sprinkler system leads to poor crop coverage, pump failure or burst mainlines. This guide explains pressure ratings, sizing and which HDPE pipes to use.

    A sprinkler irrigation system is only as good as its pipes. Undersized pipes cause pressure loss and uneven sprinkler coverage. Oversized pipes waste your budget. This guide helps you select the right HDPE pipe size and pressure rating for Indian farm irrigation.

    Understanding Pressure in a Sprinkler System

    • Pump discharge pressure: pressure at the pump outlet (from the pump curve sheet)
    • Operating pressure at nozzle: most agricultural sprinkler heads require 2.5–3.5 bar at the nozzle to perform correctly
    • Friction loss: pressure drop due to water flowing through pipe — increases with smaller pipe, longer run, or higher flow rate
    • Static head: pressure change due to elevation (1 bar for every 10m of height difference between pump and field)

    For most Indian farm sprinkler systems: PN 6 (SDR 17) PE 80 HDPE pipe is the correct mainline choice for pump discharge of 4–6 bar and mainline lengths up to 500m.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Using too small a mainline diameter — causes high friction loss and uneven pressure across the field
    • Using PN 2.5 or PN 4 pipe on a system with a powerful pump — pipe will not handle pressure surges
    • Ignoring elevation — a 30m rise from pump to field head = 3 bar pressure loss on top of friction losses
    • Not installing a pressure regulator where pump pressure exceeds the pipe PN rating
    • Using non-ISI-certified cheap pipes in lateral lines — these fail under UV exposure within 2–3 field seasons
